Ask Questions

When you’re trying to decide what to get rid of and what to keep it can be intimidating and somewhat exhausting. If you have a list of questions to ask yourself about each item though, it can speed up the process. It will become a more realistic and effective process rather than an exhausting one. Try using some of the following questions:

-Have I used this in the last year?

-Does this item bring me joy?

-Do I have multiple items that serve the same purpose?

-Does it fit in my living space?

-Am I keeping this item for sentimental reasons?

-How can I learn to emotionally let go of this item?

Make your own unique list of questions that can help you in determining what to live with and what to live without.

Make Lists

Make a list of items in your apartment that you don’t need anymore or find a list online to reference. Items such as broken parts to appliances, extra or unused kitchenware, old paperwork, unused frames, manuals, or spare parts are good items to put on that list. Use that list to help you in getting rid of items without having to think about it. Deciding beforehand what will be thrown out just might make it easier for you throughout the process.

Keep A Positive Attitude

Sometimes it can be difficult to get rid of items and to stay positive throughout the experience. Visualize the benefits of a cleaner and less cluttered home. Spread out the process between days, weeks, or maybe months, depending on how much stuff you have. Minimalism is great because it teaches you about the value of different items. You’ll learn to only buy those things which are necessary to you and living a joyful life.

“Have nothing in your home that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.”

- William Morris
